Wood Duck Box Installation

In March 2007, a Boy Scout Troop from Charlotte, NC installed 8 wood duck boxes throughout the preserve. These boxes will provide nesting habitat for our resident wood duck population. Come admire the Scouts' carpentry skills and watch as our wood duck population continues to grow.

Coming Soon: Parking and Restrooms

In October 2006, we received a grant from the North Carolina Recreational Trails Program to construct a Welcome Center, complete with restrooms and ample parking. The facility will feature parking spaces for 19 vehicles including one handicap space as well as two restrooms featuring environmentally friendly composting toilets. Check back often to monitor the progress of construction.

New Camping Options

Beginning this fall, the preserve will feature two additional camping areas. These facilities, which are the first to offer land-based camping in Tyrrell County, will be located along Little Alligator River. Visitors will be able to drive or paddle up to these sites and enjoy a serene night under the stars.

Spotlight
You may notice some signs of fire throughout the preserve, but do not be alarmed. We conducted prescribed burns in some of the loblolly pine forests during the winter and spring. This technique will help:
  • Improve wildlife habitat
  • Enhance and perpetuate pine forests
  • Reduce the risk of devastating fires
